Promise Adebayo-Ige Honored with Inaugural Rob Ruta Award

Last year, we hosted our very first Men’s College Cup NISOA Seminar in Cary, NC. The inaugural class was the best and brightest stars in college soccer officiating. They were hand-selected by the NCAA and Conference Coordinators for their potential and promise to serve the college game at the highest levels. Amongst those stars was a young man, Rob Ruta, who shined brightly in the crowd. He was a natural leader, a mentor to others, a devoted referee, and a steward of the game. Rob had the unique ability to make a room feel smaller, connecting the most unlikely, and bringing a sense of community wherever he went. He knew no strangers. The referee community was better for Rob having played a small part in building it. Earlier this year, we lost Rob. His unexpected and tragic loss left shock waves in our community. The community he so strongly built and weaved together with each connection he made. He touched so many lives so deeply throughout his short career, that his loss weighed heavily on many across the country.

As we gathered for our second Men’s College Cup Seminar, it was only fitting to honor Rob Ruta, our inaugural class champion, and create an award dedicated in his honor to celebrate similar leaders in our community. This award is designated to highlight an outstanding individual each year, who demonstrates the leadership and community-creating qualities that Rob embodied. This attendee is selected by peers and administrators at the College Cup Seminar and announced at the event banquet. It is a great honor to announce the creation of the annual Rob Ruta Award which pays tribute to Rob by celebrating those who strive to continue this legacy, both on and off the field.

Please join us in celebrating the winner of the inaugural Rob Ruta Award, Promise Adebayo-Ige. Representing the East Tennessee chapter of NISOA, Promise demonstrated the kind of leadership and dedication that we should each strive to achieve. He helped cultivate a positive learning environment for all and empowers others to do their best.

Congratulations on earning this award, Promise. Thank you for carrying on the legacy of Rob Ruta.
