I would like to thank NISOA for providing the opportunity to
seek support for Larry Briggs' induction into the UMass Athletic
Hall of Fame, Class of 2008. We ask you to join us in this
effort. Let me thank those of you in advance for your effort in
this cause. It is important to realize that whatever we have
reaped monetarily or personally through soccer officiating is a
direct result of Lawrence E. Briggs vision and leadership as the
"Founder and Father of Soccer Officiating in New England and in
the United States. The following information of facts is a very
small compilation of his qualifications to be inducted.
39 years Soccer Coach of University of Massachusetts.
1942 Founding Father of the Pioneer Valley ISOA, first organized
chapter in MA & NE
1945 Developed the Dual System of Soccer Officiating
1947-50 Secretary Treasurer Pioneer Valley ISOA, first regional
collegiate chapter in U.S.
1953 National Soccer Coaches Association Honor Award
1955 Coordinator of New England Regional Soccer Clinics for
Coaches and Referees
1957 Founding Father of the New England ISOA.
1959-60 Coordinator of Referee Evaluation System.
1960-64 Revised College Soccer Rule Book Format.
1963 Considered Founding Father of NISOA .
1963 Established First Referee Assignment Committee for Soccer
Officials.
1964 Developed and Produced First Soccer Mechanics Film.
Honorary Life Membership PVISOA and NEISOA
1967 NISOA Honor Award
1968 NISOA Honorary Life Member
2000 NISOA HALL OF FAME
He was inducted into the NATIONAL SOCCER HALL OF FAME in Oneonta
as a BUILDER (sustained and positive impact on U.S. soccer at
the national level, 1978; as a COACH, 1991; and as an OFFICIAL,
2000.
He is one of only two soccer coaches in NCAA Soccer History to
be inducted as an official and coach.
Please send your support letter after January 6 and prior to
March 8, 2008 to the UMass Athletic Director listed below.
Last year 8 support letters were lost or misplaced. I
courteously ask anyone who sends a letter in support of Larry's
induction to send me a copy, so that I may have an official
record and will be able to supply the committee with a complete
file, if necessary.
